The Essential Oil Steam Distillation Apparatus is a specialized laboratory setup used for extracting essential oils from plant materials through the process of steam distillation. This apparatus efficiently separates volatile aromatic compounds from raw botanical matter without degrading their quality, making it ideal for natural product research, fragrance development, and educational demonstrations.

Components:
  1. Boiling Flask (Round Bottom Flask):
Holds water and generates steam when heated.

  2. Distillation Flask (Plant Material Chamber):
Contains the plant material through which the steam passes, vaporizing the essential oils.

  3. Condenser:
A water-cooled glass coil or straight condenser where steam and oil vapors are cooled and condensed into liquid form.

  4. Receiver Flask / Separator Funnel:
Collects the distillate, allowing separation of essential oil from the hydrosol (water).

  5. Heating Mantle or Hot Plate:
Provides controlled heat to the boiling flask.

  6. Connecting Glass Tubes & Adapters:
Ensures safe and leak-proof connections between parts.

Working Principle:

Steam is generated in the boiling flask and directed into the plant chamber. As the steam passes through the plant material, it vaporizes the volatile oils. These vapors then pass through the condenser where they cool down and return to liquid form. The resulting mixture of water and oil is collected in a separator, where the essential oil floats on top and is decanted off.

Applications:
  • Extraction of essential oils for aromatherapy

  • Production of natural fragrances and flavors

  • Botanical research and phytochemistry

  • Laboratory education and demonstration

Material:
  • High-quality borosilicate glass for excellent heat resistance and durability
