The Hoffman Electrolysis Apparatus is a laboratory device used to demonstrate the electrolysis of water and to study the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen gases using an electric current. It is widely used in educational institutions for teaching fundamental concepts of electrochemistry, redox reactions, and gas collection techniques.
Key Features:Material: Made of borosilicate glass for high chemical and thermal resistance.
Structure: Comprises three vertical glass tubes – a central reservoir and two outer graduated gas-collecting tubes.
Electrodes: Usually fitted with platinum or graphite electrodes at the bottom of the outer tubes.
Graduated Tubes: Each outer tube is graduated to measure the volume of gases collected.
Gas Collection: Hydrogen collects at the cathode, oxygen at the anode (in a 2:1 volume ratio).
Stopcocks: Fitted with stopcocks or rubber stoppers to release collected gases safely.
When a DC electric current is passed through the acidulated (with dilute sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide) water in the central reservoir, water molecules break down into hydrogen and oxygen gases.
At the cathode (−): 2H++2e−→H2↑2H^+ + 2e^- → H_2 \uparrow2H++2e−→H2↑
At the anode (+): 2H2O→O2↑+4H++4e−2H_2O → O_2 \uparrow + 4H^+ + 4e^-2H2O→O2↑+4H++4e−
Demonstration of electrolysis and Faraday’s laws.
Study of volumetric gas evolution.
Understanding stoichiometry and molar gas ratios.
Ideal for chemistry labs, science exhibitions, and academic experiments.
